Buy Nothing New Month 2024

As we embark on a new year, many of us are seeking ways to make positive changes in our lives, whether it’s adopting healthier habits or reducing our environmental impact. One impactful initiative gaining momentum is “Buy Nothing New Month,” a movement encouraging individuals to abstain from purchasing new items throughout January. Clockwise Credit Union is excited to support our community in embracing this challenge and reaping the rewards that come with a more mindful approach to consumption.

Why “Buy Nothing New Month”?

This campaign is all about moving beyond simply recycling, to reducing the amount of new stuff that we buy, and by extension, the amount of waste that we create. It’s about cherishing the things we already have, repairing things rather than sending them to landfill, and finding new homes for the things we no longer need.

Last year, 65% of participants bought nothing new for a whole month, and 31% bought less than they usually would.

How to Participate:

  1. Assess Your Needs: Before you start, take inventory of your essential needs. Identify areas where you can prioritize reusing or repurposing existing items rather than buying new ones. This could include clothing, household items, or even electronics.
  2. Get Creative with DIY: “Buy Nothing New Month” is the perfect time to tap into your creativity. Consider do-it-yourself (DIY) projects for items you may have otherwise bought new. Whether it’s upcycling old furniture or creating handmade gifts, DIY projects are not only satisfying but also promote sustainability.
  3. Explore Secondhand: Charity shops and online platforms for secondhand items are treasure troves waiting to be explored. Embrace the thrill of the hunt and discover unique, pre-loved items that have plenty of life left in them.
  4. Borrow or Share: Instead of buying something new that you might only need temporarily, explore borrowing or sharing arrangements within your community. This collaborative approach not only reduces consumption but also fosters a sense of community spirit.
  5. Repair and Repurpose: Take the time to assess items in need of repair or maintenance. Whether it’s a tear in your favorite jacket or a malfunctioning household appliance, repairing and repurposing can extend the life of these items and reduce the need for replacements.
