Don’t delay small home repairs – it will cost you more in the long run

Our last house had a leak in the roof. It dripped down into a closet we had in the corner of the bathroom. It didn’t start off as a full leak – when we moved in it was just a damp smell when it rained. After a few months of being in the house, it started to drip slowly into the closet. We didn’t have much disposable income at the time, and it only dripped when it rained heavily – so we just ignored it. The problem was hidden behind the closet door, and it didn’t seem so bad.

Over time, the drip became heavier and heavier. Eventually, the ceiling in the closet caved in (only in that corner – not the whole bathroom thankfully!) and the wooden beams of the roof rotted. The damage cost a lot to repair, and the roof leak had to be fixed. I learned my lesson – don’t ignore home repairs! A fix early on can save a lot of money in the long run.

It’s the same with a lot of things in the home – a leaky tap, boiler problems, a broken toilet, electrical problems. Not only can fixing a problem early save you money in the long run but putting a home repair problem behind you can alleviate a lot of stress and improve the quality of your home life.

I knew my roof needed repairing, but I did my best to ignore the problem – and looking back I know that having it lingering over me caused me a lot of stress – looking back I could have stopped a small problem from becoming a bigger problem by not putting it off.

If you’re struggling with paying for a repair to your home, you can spread the cost with a loan from Clockwise Credit Union. Our personal loans are from £50 to £7,500 and there are No application fees or early repayment charges. Find out more here.
